JOHN JOHNSON  R.P.T.

John Johnson giving a DemoHello, I am John Johnson. Some of you will recognise me from my demonstrations at your Woodturning Club or at Exhibitions.  I have been interested in Woodworking for as long as I can remember and bought my first lathe when I was 11 years old, and turned regularly until I was into my teenage years.   I went into a 5 years apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery and worked in the trade for 10 years before starting in Local Government as a Building Inspector and more studies to qualify as a Building Surveyor, a job I did until 14 years ago, when I was forced to retire due to a bad back injury.

Luckily I had started turning as a hobby again in the early 1980s on yet another new lathe, a Coronet No 1 which served me well. In 1993 I decided to turn my hobby into a business – now as a full time woodturner.

I make on a commercial basis turned posts for kitchen manufacturers; Newels and spindles for stairs – spindles for furniture and antique furniture repairs. My most popular selling line is fruit– sold through shops and galleries, clocks, barometers – pens, light pulls, bottle stoppers, door wedges, bowls and cutting boards are some of the other things I make to sell at the large craft fairs we now sell through. I also demonstrate at Woodturning Clubs throughout the country and run courses in my workshop on a one to one basis.
